PLSS

This is a PLSS. These maps are types of land surveys and this particular map covers much of the United States. These maps rely more on description that accuracy. We can see from this map how land is divided in townships. These maps help us and give us a general understanding of the land. These maps also give us an idea of ownership.

Climograph

This is a Climograph. These maps show us the amount of precipitation and the temperature for each month of the year. It also allows us to make correlations between temperatue and rainfall. The maps let us look at many different things at once. Usually there is correlation between temperature and precipitation but, in this map of Los Angeles California there is none.

Map Link

Proportional Circle Map

This is a Proportional Circle Map. The variables in this map are represented by circles. The bigger the circle, the larger the population. In this map we see Mexican population in the Western part of the United States. Circle maps make it easy to interperet information.

Map Link

Hypsometric Map

This is a Hypsometric Map. The map shows different elevation levels by using bumps. It does not feel smooth like typical maps. It shows the elevation through shading and bumps. This particular map is of British Columbia and Cananada. The areas in purple show the areas of highest elevation. The shading shows how the land is elevated and set up.

Map Link

Isobar Map

This is a Isobar Map. This map is used to show pressure differences in the atmosphere. It helps us predict weather by showing low and high pressure systems. Lines that are closer show rapid changes in pressure and vise versa. In This map we can see the pressure systems in the United States.

Propaganda Maps

This is a propaganda map. These maps promote particular political issues. In this case the map is promoting marijuana dispensaries. It compares medical marijuana dispensaries and Starbucks Coffee. Although the map shows more dispensaries than Starbucks it is not true. The author of this map was bias and gave false information for a reason.
Map Link

Standardized Choropleth Map

This is a Stadardized Choropleth Map.These maps give data accurately and efficiently. This map looks at the population of people 14 and under in Canada. We can assume that this data is accurate and efficient because it is a Standardized Choropleth Map.

Similarity Matrix

This is a Similarity Matrix. This map compared two data points. Data that is more similar are given higher data points and lower scores are given to data that is less similar.

Map Link

Histogram

This is a Histogram. It gives visual representation of a data set. The frequencies lay in the y-axis, while the thing to be measured lays in the x-axis. Histograms are good when doing surveys and provide "bell curves".

Map Link

This is a Planimetric Map.These maps are 2D and is used for analyzing roads and city layouts. This map is a layout out of New York City. These maps can be used for navigation. It depicts roadways and layouts but, it does not show elevation.

Map Link

Scatter Plots

This is a Scatter Plot. This map allows us to look at a lot of different data at one time and data with large sample sizes. This map compares the eruptions of Old Faithful, and the duration of eruption compared to time between eruptions. Scatter Plots use horizontal and vertical axes to plot data points similar to line graphs.

Map Link

Stem and Leaf Plot

This is a Stem and Leaf Plot. This plot is used to map out large amounts of numbers. It allows us to compare numbers and data easily. In experiments dealing with many numbers we can plot the our data easily. The stem stands for numbers in the the tens digits and the numbers in leaf side stands for numbers in the ones digits.

Map Link

Wind Rose

This is a Wind Rose. This particular map is for LaGuadia Airport in New York. It is a cartographic peice and shows wind patterns and frequencys. The percentages around the rose shows the frequency of the wind and where it blows. These maps show how and where wind blows over time. These maps are useful for airports and pilots.

Map Link

DOQQ (Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads)

This is a Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads. Often these maps are taken with infrared light. These infrared light photos pick up frequencies unavailable to the human eye. The land and water contrast is higher in this photo and each pixel represents 1 meter of land.

Map Link

Continuously Variable Proportional Circle Map

This is a Continuously Variable Proportional Circle Map. This map uses circles to represent variables. These circles change with frequency and it allows for variables to be analyzed.

map link

Classed Choropleth Map

This is a Classed Choropleth Map. This map shows the different classes around the state. Various states fall into different classes. These classes are defined by their color. This map analyzes the classes of Hispanic people living in Florida. It gives percentages based on these differences. This map is helpful when looking at a large amount of data.

Map Link

Bivariate Choropleth Map

This is a Bivariate Choropleth Map. In this particular map it analyzes two variables, unemployment rate per county and the total persons with disabilities. These maps allows us to look at two different data sets at the same time. These maps are very useful in analyzing sets of data that would not mean much if they were all alone. In this map the larger the wheelchairs the higher the disability rates, and the darker the color the higher the uneployment rate is.

Map Link

Nominal Area Choropleth Map

This is a Nominal Area Choropleth Map. This map allows easy interpretation of minority group with the highest percent of state population. In this photo it color codes states by minority groups. It takes a qualitative approach to look at minority groups.

Map Link

Bilateral Graph

This is a Bilateral Graph. These graph analyzes the increases and decreases beyond the zero point. These graphs analyzes positive and negative values and graphs them both for comparison. With this graph we can analyze more that one set of data at a time.

Map Link

Lorenz Curve

This is a Lorenz Curve. It is a "graphical representation of the proportionality of a distribution. It represents a probability distribution of statistical values, and is often associated with income distribution calculations and commonly used in the analysis of inequality". These graphs are used when dealing with economy.

Map Link

Index Value Plot

This is a Index Value Plot. This particular plot looks a streamflow of New Mexico. There is a standard line, normal line, and etching line. These lines show variations and whether it was a wet or dry year. This map shows changes over years.
